know your roots
I am officially a Spanish major. Estoy oficialmente con especialización en español. Ayer hice el cambio. (Yesterday I made the change.) I guess, you could say I'm trying to get in touch with my roots. I think I might try to use it for some international opportunities. I'm probably going to focus more on translation than teaching. It's really exciting to finally feel connected with something. Journalism was fun, psychology was interesting, but Spanish is real. El español es real. It's applicable in my day-to-day life. It's part of my history, the part that I've never had much interest in knowing a lot about. Now that I've been studying the language, I want to know more about the people who shaped my grandparents, my parents, and ultimately me. I don't feel like the language was ever a barrier between my father's parents and myself, they speak almost perfect English. I do feel like this will bring us closer though, before it's too late. My aunts and my mother have on many occasion wished that they could call their grandmother and ask her for a date or a factoid on their family tree. I am going to learn from their mistakes, or oversights if you will, and be proactive in learning about the Fraga's this summer. Oscar, Caridad, Charlie, Peter, Mary y Zaida.
